Narrative Film Project
Introduction
After completing my music video project, my second Film and Video project is a narrative film. During this project I will look into different genres and discover more about narrative film. I chose to do a horror film (out of the options of creating a horror, animation, foley sound or poem film), and have developed and documented all my ideas and work, which you can see as you look through the website.
Film Genres
The Task was to add two films or TV series as examples onto each genre/sub-genre in the list. I had to look at films I believed fit the correct genres, and tried to stick to films I had watched/ knew of. I discovered how some films fit into multiple different categories and even discovered some sub-genres.
I used the word document with the film genres/sub-genres to fill out the films I chose to apply to the categories, which is on the PDF file to the left. However, I have expanded on this on the another page... including some writing and images from all the selected films. (Which you can access by clicking the button below)
Film Archetypes
An archetype is a symbol, which appears and reoccurs so often it is recognizable in many cultures. I have explored some of the common character archetypes in films and given examples. All my examples of typical character archetypes are on the found on my 'film archetypes' page. The button below will take you to the page.
Contextual information
The task was: Contextual information (Research at least three inspirational films or sequences with images). I have complied a contextual information page, filled with films and television series that have inspired and helped me develop my narrative film. I have included films and shows such as: 'US'; 'Black Swan'; 'The End of the F***ing World'; ' Memento'; and two directors that inspired me (Edgar Wright and Wes Anderson.)
Mindmap
I created a mindmap to organise, link/ corelate and develop initial ideas onto paper. Throughout the rest of my preparation and film making, I have been able to refer to this mindmap. It has been particularly helpful when drafting and writing my script, as I could refer to the notes. Most of the points I've made on the mindmap have been expanded on in other sections of my wixsite. Therefore, overall: creating the mind map has been beneficial when developing ideas and referring to ideas.
Moodboard
I collected images from films that inspired my narrative story and complied them onto my pinterest board. I then organised them onto a landscape document to clearly demonstrate the style I want to create with my own project. Since creating this board, I have been able to use it as a way to reflect on inspirations. From my moodboard, I have been able to further my understandings of the colour tone I want for my exterior scenes; I desire to achieve a cool, grey-blue tone. I was also able to notice, after compiling various images for the board, the warm tones used on characters faces in interior scenes. I will take inspiration and try to use this in my own interior moments. I desire to aim for a clear inspiration between the films on my moodboard and contextual information page to come through into my final narrative film.
This is a moodboard for the television series that inspired the look and aesthetic of my narrative film. The End of the F***ing World is an incredible dark comedy, drama series shown on Channel 4. I have written more about this series on my contextual information page, where I go into detail about why this series has been such an inspiration to my narrative film. By assembling these images from the television series onto the moodboard I could visualise the aesthetic I wanted to achieve. I was especially interested in the beach scenes, as it is a big inspiration for my own chosen location setting. Through these organised images on the board, I have been able to identify the way characters position themselves in scenes, which I will take inspiration from when presenting my own characters. Therefore, overall TEOTFW has been a key inspiration to my film, so creating moodboard has aided me in visual planning.
Initial Images
I had a clear vision of the look and aesthetic I wanted to achieve for my film, so I took pictures of the scenes and locations that I wanted to achieve in my final video. In exterior scenes I was inspired by the look of 'TEOTFW' series, so used it as inspiration reference. In interior scenes, I wanted to make my film appear central, so in my initial images I played around with framing and worked out what would look best. I used my Storyboard plan in order to get the images I wanted, which in turn aided me in finalising my prep work before shooting began.
Location Report
List of my film's locations:
-
Beach/shore
-
Grass path
-
Dining room
-
Kitchen
-
Hallway
I had a clear idea of all the locations where I wanted to film and set my video; however, taking pictures and visiting my locations aided me in preparing the frames I wanted to create when filming.
Costume/ make-up/ props/ cast and crew
I have explored costume, make-up and props; and written about it on the page linked to below. I also looked into cast and crew, which I have also written about on the page linked below.

Music
I took inspiration from the musical score and soundtrack in TEOTFW, so I wanted to experiment with music. I was interested in jazz music (specifically saxophone), so I listened to to various albums on Spotify. I found a music artist, who made music I believed would work well in my film: Lester Young. His song: "I cover the waterfront" was a perfect fit.
Schedule and Equipment list
Because of covid-19 restrictions I really had to plan ahead and schedule everything. I also had to do this, because I was playing two different characters. Therefore, I had to be positive that I filmed all of Blanca's scenes first, as I planned to cut my hair when I performed as Fay (/Blanca on the beach). I also had to prepare my equipment list, because I planned to film on multiple days and in different locations.
Editing & Film Notes
When filming I made specific notes about additions and changes I would have to make in premiere pro. I filmed my interior dining room scenes on two separate days, because I had to play both characters. Because of this, there was slight differences in the two shots; even though, I marked out the tripod spot with tape on the floor and used a ring-light. To make the shots fit together better, I used the colour and tone tools
This is a screenshot of my timeline on premiere pro, while I was in the process of editing my film. I edited important moments, I wanted to focus on individually, externally to my final film file and then added them separate films into the correct places in my timeline. This was useful, because I was able to edit down my film to the standard I desired.
This is the thumbnail I chose to use when uploading my narrative project to YouTube. I used an image from the opening scene of my film and put it into Photoshop. In Photoshop I added text onto the image and change the size and font till I achieve my desired look. To make the title of "Narrative Project" appear bolder, I duplicated the text and made the back layer of text slightly larger and changed the font colour to black; doing this made the title stand out more.
Bibliography
In my bibliography I have linked to work I have referred to and looked at throughout my wixsite and narrative project.
On the right is the PDF file of my bibliography where all the links used in my project can be found.
Evaluation
To finalise my coursework for this project, I had to write an evaluation of my work over the course of this project and my final video. Through creating an evaluation, I have been able to reflect on the work I have achieved over the course.
